History of Handbags

Most people would never think of learning about the history of the handbag. Yet these items have been used for centuries to hold valuables. If one really wants to learn all about these totes, then all they need is to do is search the internet. No matter if they are made of leather or embroidered cloth, handbags are an integral part of today's society and their history is very interesting.

In the beginning, pharaohs were the first to carry a pouch to hold valuables. However, the modern totes did not start to appear until the early 16th century. Then, both men and women started to carry them to hold a variety of items. A man's tote was usually made with leather, while a women's was heavily embroidered. These first real "handbags" are still sought after by avid collectors today.

One unique, historical tidbit is that the term "handbag" did not come about until luggage bags were carried by men during the early 1900's. This led to a new outlet for women, which included bags with internal compartments, fasteners and even locks. This was also the time when special places were made for everything from glasses to hand held fans. With this new invention, the purses of today began to form. Every decade after this saw ingenious ways to make them even more fashionable.

Some form of handbags has been used for generations to carry valuables. A look through history will confirm that some form of a handbag was always used. No matter what they were made of, they can still be found if one looks hard enough and is willing to pay the price. Designer handbags are big business, especially in today's high fashion world. Having the most fashionable handbag can still complement the perfect outfit.
